Schedule of Events

Day 1: Saturday

  • Location: Millington Stables, 3361 Millington Rd., Free Union, VA 22940
  • Time: 8:00 AM
  • Cost: $80.00 (Riding in AM and PM)
  • Notes: Bring your own water, snacks, and lunch. Instructional materials will be provided


Sessions:

  1. Morning: Flat exercises to improve position, control, and confidence. Gymnastics to enhance rider security. (Approximately 1.5 hours)
  2. Afternoon: Riding in fields, narrow trails, and hills. Field-specific exercises including rein-backs, turn on the forehand for gates, and reversing field for staff. Navigating trappy terrain, banks, ditches, streams, coops, panels, and natural obstacles. (Approximately 1.5 hours)

Reminder: Protective headgear is a must for mounted sessions. No exceptions.

Day 2: Sunday

  • Location: Farmington Hunt Club, 5926 Wesley Chapel Rd., Free Union, VA 22940
  • Time: 8:00 AM
  • Cost: $40.00 (Must have participated on Saturday)
  • Includes: Lunch at the Hunt Club, info session, and materials


Activities:

  • Hunt: Participate in a hunt (Must participate in Day 1 to join)
  • Alternative: Visit hounds in the pen for green horses


Afternoon:

  • Lunch & Information Session:
    • Topics: Hunting conditions, scent, horn calls, staff roles, protocol, traditions, and attire
    • Speakers: Masters and Hunt Staff

Who Should Attend?

  • Pony Clubbers & Trail Riders who want to try foxhunting for the first time.
  • Hilltoppers who want to improve their riding skills or move up to Second Flight.
  • Second and First Flight riders who want to become more confident.
  • Green Horses new to hunting or new to coops and natural obstacles.

Clinicians

  1. Joy Crompton, MFH: Joy has been hunting with Farmington Hunt for 30 years and is currently joint MFH. She has schooled many young horses in the hunt field, led all three fields, and is now leads first flight three times a week during hunt season. Joy brings to this clinic a wealth of professional experience and expertise. As an event rider, she started many young horses and brought them through the Preliminary level. She won the team Adult Preliminary Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park. Particularly her training with Jimmy Wofford taught her how to navigate cross country jumps and terrain safely. Joy shares her extensive knowledge by teaching students for the hunt field and combined training competitions.
  2. Kip Holloway, MFH: Kip started drag hunting as an 11 year old in Massachusetts, then moved to Middleburg as a teenager, where she was introduced to live fox hunting, eventing and timber racing. She has trained many young horses through the intermediate level of eventing, and introduced many youngsters to the hunt field. Kip has been hunting with Farmington Hunt since 1992, and started leading second flight in 2012. She became a joint MFH in 2019 and splits her hunting days between whipping-in and 2nd flight field master.
  3. Liz King, MFH: Liz has been breeding, training and riding professionally since she was 16 years old and was also trained under Jimmy Wofford. Ms. King has been managing the Millington Stables and making horses available for all types of riders, whether trail riding, riding lessons or foxhunting. She has been leading the Farmington Hunt Club Hilltoppers for over 15 years and has been a MFH for Farmington Hunt Club for several years.
